Does Columbia run small?

Yes. By its own size chart, Columbia runs about a full size small in men's sizes and runs about half a size small in women's sizes. A 27 cm foot is a men's US 9 in 23 of 34 other brands' charts, and a US 10 in Columbia. Charts show how a brand means its sizes to fit, not how any one shoe feels, so read Columbia's own fit advice below as well.

How this is worked out: every foot length from 25 to 29 cm (men's) and 22.5 to 26 cm (women's), in 1 mm steps, is read against Columbia's chart and the other 34 brands' charts the way the calculator reads them, rounding up between sizes. How to measure for Columbia

Columbia's own instructions: stand on paper taped to the floor with your heel against the wall, have someone mark the longest part of your toes, and measure. Use the longer foot, and measure with hiking socks if that is what you will wear. Columbia publishes a foot-length RANGE for each size; the figures here are the midpoint of each published range.

Columbia fit guidance

Columbia's published foot-length figures run noticeably shorter per size number than most other brands on this site -- their men's US 9 covers roughly 26.0-26.4cm, where many brands put US 9 nearer 27cm. In practice that means your Columbia number will often come out about one size larger than your usual size in an athletic brand. Trust the centimeter measurement rather than carrying your usual US number across. Columbia also offers Wide fittings in parts of the range. Columbia does make children's footwear, but its published children's figures disagree sharply between retailers. One puts a little kids' 8 at about 14.2cm and another at 13cm, a gap of more than a full size, and no Columbia-published children's chart was found to settle it. The children's figures shown here are therefore the standard youth scale rather than Columbia's own. Note Columbia's adult sizes already run about a number larger than most brands at the same foot length, so carrying a usual size across is unreliable for this brand in either category.
