Does Birkenstock run small?

No, if anything it runs large. By its own size chart, Birkenstock runs about half an EU size large in men's sizes and runs half to one EU size large in women's sizes. A 24 cm foot is a women's EU 38 in 10 of 33 other brands' charts, and an EU 37 in Birkenstock. Charts show how a brand means its sizes to fit, not how any one shoe feels, so read Birkenstock's own fit advice below as well.

How this is worked out: every foot length from 25 to 29 cm (men's) and 22.5 to 26 cm (women's), in 1 mm steps, is read against Birkenstock's chart and the other 34 brands' charts the way the calculator reads them, rounding up between sizes. Birkenstock publishes 2 men's and 2 women's width fittings. The standard fitting is Regular in men's and Narrow in women's, so a Regular is the standard men's fitting but a wider women's one. Check which chart a letter belongs to before carrying it across.

How to measure for Birkenstock

Birkenstock sizes are native EU sizes; measure heel-to-toe standing (barefoot is most accurate for sandals), using the longer foot.

Birkenstock fit guidance

Birkenstock's own official conversion is US size + 31 = EU size (women's) or US size + 33 = EU size (men's). UK conversions vary meaningfully between retailers, so UK sizing is not shown here -- buy by EU size where possible. Birkenstock sizes children in EU, exactly as it does adults: the EU number is what is printed on the footbed and is the reliable column. Birkenstock publishes each children's size against a PAIR of US sizes (an EU 24 is listed as a US 6-6.5); the lower of each pair is shown here, so treat the US figure as approximate and the EU as definitive. Their children's range starts at a 15cm foot. Birkenstock makes its footbed in two widths and the standard differs by gender: Regular is the standard men's fitting, but Birkenstock states its Narrow fits most women's feet, so Narrow is the women's standard rather than a narrow option. Treating Regular as standard for both would send most women a full step too roomy. Check the footprint symbol on the footbed near the heel. Filled means Narrow, outlined means Regular. Birkenstock also publishes the actual footbed width in millimeters for every EU size, running from 85mm at a 35 Regular to 121mm at a 50 Regular, with Narrow about 4mm under Regular at each size.
